What is the different between a Like and a Follow on Facebook?

If you haven't noticed, when you look at a Facebook Business page, you see statistics for the number of "Likes" and the number of "Followers". The numbers are typically fairly consistent, but not exactly the same. So, if Facebook Likes and Facebook Follows are being differentiated, it's important to understand the difference between the two.

The terms "like" and "follow" are often used interchangeably on Facebook, but they have distinct meanings. While they both show support for a brand, the key difference between a like and a follow on Facebook is the level of engagement and control over content visibility.

Liking a Page on Facebook

When you like a Page, you are essentially expressing your general appreciation for the content or brand that the Page represents. It's like giving it a thumbs-up or a virtual pat on the back. Liking a Page is a public action, and it will show up in your Profile and other people's news feeds.

However, liking a Page does not automatically mean that you will see all of its posts in your news feed. Facebook's algorithm determines which posts you see based on a variety of factors, including your past interactions with the Page, your interests, and your overall news feed settings.

Following a Page on Facebook

Following a Page is a stronger signal of intent than simply liking it. It means that you are actively interested in seeing all of the Page's posts in your news feed. When you follow a Page, you will receive notifications when it posts new content, and its posts will be prioritized in your news feed.

Following a Page is also a more committed gesture than liking it. The follower will see posts as they're made and have the ability to engage.

Is it better for my Facebook business page to have more likes or more followers?

It seems that saying "you want both!" isn't the perfect answer, so it really depends on the goals of your brand. Some businesses feel Facebook is a popularity contest and want to see as many followers as possible. This is also more valuable if you're simply looking to increase brand awareness. However, if you recognize the value of "quality over quantity" and you're more interested in driving engagement and conversions, then followers are more important. Also, keep in mind that driving more engagement will help to boost the exposure of your brand, which can ultimately help increase your brand awareness as well.

How can you increase both likes and followers on your Facebook business page?

Here are a few tips for increasing your likes and followers on Facebook:

  • Post high-quality content that is relevant to your target audience.

  • Use eye-catching visuals.

  • Engage with your followers by responding to comments and questions.

  • Run contests and giveaways.

  • Promote your page on other social media channels and your website.

By following these tips, you can attract more likes and followers to your Facebook business page, and ultimately achieve your business goals. And, while you're at it, consider following (and liking!) Navitas Marketing on Facebook!
