Trend 1: Brands Strike A Balance Between Public And Private Engagement

With the new year comes new social media trends! Hootsuite put out their annual report for the upcoming year and here is the first trend. Brands will strike a balance between private and public channels for engagement.

As many platforms increase the use of private channels, it’s important to maintain the balance between private and public. Users want the benefit of public and private channels with their friends, family, colleagues, and favorite brands. Private channels are valued in the conversations held in messaging or group spaces on social platforms. LinkedIn, for example, launched the Teammates feature to highlight and show updates of your current colleagues.

Public spaces are also growing - specifically with the continued use of IGTV on Instagram  and the rise of TikTok. Is social media going to move completely to private spaces in the future? Probably not. Approximately 52 percent of all brand discovery happens in public social feeds. This is important for brands to keep in mind as they prepare for 2020. Plus, could we call it social media if there were zero public interactions?
