Three Social Media Trends to Watch for in 2022

The social media landscape seems to change almost every day. There are many trends for marketers to keep track of, whether it’s the meteoric rise of TikTok or a viral post on Twitter. To avoid getting overwhelmed, it’s essential to identify and focus on a small number of different strategies. With that, here are three social media trends for marketers to look out for in 2022:

#1 - TikTok will become the most powerful social network.

TikTok passed the 1 billion user mark in September, making it the 7th most popular social network globally. Although this number is still behind Instagram and Facebook, TikTok is growing at a much faster rate. Last January, TikTok only had 689 million users, which means that it has seen a 45% increase in under a year. Compare this to the 6 percent user growth rate of Instagram in 2020 and it becomes clear that TikTok is poised for another record-shattering year in 2022.

#2 - Influencer marketing will continue to grow, especially on TikTok.

There seem to be influencers for every industry, no matter how small or niche. Influencer marketing is sure to grow in 2022, as a recent survey found that many people have trusted influencers more than brands since the beginning of the pandemic. This is especially true on TikTok, whose algorithm has led to the emergence of prominent influencers in many different spaces. Forming partnerships with the right influencers will be essential for brands, as they can drastically increase brand awareness and drive sales through their audience.

#3 - Long-form video is phasing out.

A few years ago, long-form video seemed to be the next big thing. Facebook Watch was starting to gain traction, IGTV launched, and YouTube began rewarding videos that passed the 10-minute mark. Fast forward to now, however, and this is no longer the case. TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube shorts appear to be taking over. In fact, 60 percent of all internet videos published in 2020 were under 2 minutes long. As a result, brands that want to reach new followers and re-engage existing ones in 2022 should focus on creating short-form videos.
